An Impromptu day trip from Madrid to Toledo

Last week, my husband and I had to travel to Madrid for our work. We have been to the city a few times but did not get a chance to explore it. But this time, we explored the city. We also took a day trip from Madrid to Toledo.

How to reach Toledo from Madrid?

The distance between Madrid and Toledo is less than 80Kms. So, this makes it a fantastic option for a day trip. Both the places are well connected by train and bus.

By Train

We started searching about how to reach Toledo from Madrid. The train takes 33 minutes, so we decided to book a train ticket to Toledo from Madrid.

We reached Atocha Cercanías train station to book the next train to Toledo at noon. To our surprise, there were no trains until 5 PM. All the trains were chock-full. We decided to look at the renfe website just in case we could find something, but we could not get the seats together, so we dropped the idea of traveling to Toledo by train.

The one-way ticket was approx. 11 euros per person. We advise you to book tickets in advance if you plan a day trip from Madrid to Toledo.

By Bus

The next thing we did was to search for how to reach Toledo from Madrid by bus. We found that ALSA takes an hour, so we booked tickets online via Omio for 1:30 PM.

The bus departs from the underground bus hub in Plaza Eliptica in Madrid. The one-way ticket cost is approx. 5.75 for a person.

One tip, “Do not book ALSA tickets online as you might end up paying commissions to such sites.” You can go to the bus hub to get the tickets from ALSA ticket vending machines and save the commissions.

We inquired and learned that we could hop on any bus regardless of the time on our tickets. We just stood in the queue and took the next available bus.
