Chandrashila Tungnath Trek in Uttrakhand, India

Chandrashila Tungnath Trek in Uttrakhand is one of the fantastic experiences. Tungnath in Uttrakhand is one of the highest Shiva temples in the world, and it is a sheer state of hush and thrill.

Chandrashila Tungnath Trek

Chopta in Rudraprayag district is the base of this trek. Chandrashila is the summit, so Chopta-> Tungnath-> Chandrashila is how you can hike.

How to reach Chopta from Delhi?

The cheapest way to reach Chopta (Approximately 450 Km) from Delhi is via bus. These buses are available from ISBT Kashmere Gate & Anand Vihar bus terminals.

Delhi to Rishikesh: Take an overnight bus to reach Rishikesh early in the morning. I recommend you to take your break here, refresh, and refuel yourself with a heavy breakfast.

Rishikesh to Rudraprayag: From Rishikesh, hop on a bus going to Rudraprayag. It will take another 5-6 hours. Do not get confused; you can also hop on a bus going towards Karanprayag and Joshimath. Get down at Rudraprayag.

Rudraprayag to Chopta: Shared taxis are available from Rudraprayag. These taxis run from early morning till 5 in the evening. The journey usually takes around 45 mins to 1 hour. You can also get a bus to Chopta (It is available only during the peak season).

Chopta to Tungnath: This 4km long trek takes around 2-3 hours.

Tungnath to Chandrashila Peak: Chandrashila Peak is around 1.5km ahead. Due to the steep climb, it takes 1 hour to reach there .

When can you do this trek?

You can do this trek any season, but I would not recommend doing it in the monsoon as mountains tend to have landslides due to heavy rains. So summer and winter are the best seasons. The breathtaking views of Bugyals (meadows) accompany you on this trek.

Plan your Chandrashila Tungnath Trek

It is advisable to start your trek as early as possible from Chopta. That gives you time to enjoy the snowcapped mountain ranges of Kumaon and Garhwal. While trekking, you will find various tea stalls on your way. So do not worry about your hunger pangs.

Do not miss an impeccable sunrise from the Chandrashila peak. To do so, you must start your trek at 4 am. Please ensure that you put on enough layered clothing and keep essentials to start trekking at such an early hour.

Staying options in Chopta are guesthouses and home stays. These start from 200 to 500 rupees per night (the prices might differ). If you’re carrying your tent, you can put it in any meadow nearby.

Eating options in Chopta

Many dhabas in Chopta serve tea, coffee, maggi, biscuits, and pakoras. The food is simple and affordable. If you prefer to stay in a homestay, you will enjoy home-cooked Garhwali food.
